Incense is traditionally used to allow the smoke to bring purification and sanctification to the space it is being used. As the incense burns it releases fragrant smoke when burnt. The act of burning incense has been an important ritual since ancient times. Believed to have originated in Egypt and has a long history of being used in conjunction with ceremonies, rituals, and spiritual and religious occasions. Incense can include sticks, spirals, ropes, cones, backflow cones, resin, oils and plants. There are many different scents available. You can choose the best option for you based on personal preference or on your intentions.

Smudging is a traditional ceremony in which you burn sacred plants to allow the smoke to cleanse and bless a space such as homes, offices or cars from negative energy. It involves four elements: (1) the container to catch the ash, traditionally a shell with water in it (water element); (2) the sacred plant(s) that is being burned such as cedar, sage, sweetgrass, tobacco (earth element); (3) fire that burns the sacred plant (fire element); and (4) smoke that is produced from the fire (air element). This is very helpful to shift/cleanse energy for anyone who is feeling stuck, negative, sluggish, or depressed.

Instructions: Prepare your items: (1) container to catch ash such as a shell (putting water in the shell can be helpful to contain the floating ash); (2) smudging stick, usually made of sacred plants such as sweetgrass, sage, cedar, tobacco; (3) a match or lighter to light the smudge stick on fire; (4) a feather or fan is optional to help guide the smoke into hard to reach areas such as the corner of a room. If you are in a contained area, open a door or window to allow the negative energy a place to escape. Light the smudge stick. Let burn for 20 seconds before blowing out. Use the feather or fan to spread the smoke to any appropriate areas where energy might be stagnant. Either in your mind, or out loud in your own words, you can use this affirmation: "Any energies that are not here for my highest and greatest good are commanded to leave with love through the open door/window or be transformed and transmuted to the highest good." The goal of smudging is to make a place clear of lingering energy that is different from what may be for your highest intention of that space.
